Dorothy "Big Mama" Sheird, 91, died peacefully on Saturday, April 30, 2011.
Her life began in Asheville, N.C. She made her home in Toano, and she was a longtime resident of the area.
Mrs. Sheird was a beautiful person who loved life, and her love for her family was apparent to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alice and Hop Sheird; three of her children, Catherine Sheird, Willie Sheird and Wayne Lee; two sisters, Mary Jane Sheird and Jessie Mae Meekins; and her four brothers, Freddie, Jack, William and Walter Sheird.
She is survived by her children, Shirley Taswell (Lee), Frederick Lee (Lisa), Alice Wilson, Jerry Lee (Magdaline) and Katrina Banks (David); her 22 grandchildren; her 24 great-grandchildren; her eight great-great-grandchildren; her three great-great-great-grandchildren; a host of loving nieces and nephews; her extended family; and many caring friends.
A homegoing service will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, at Chickahominy Baptist Church, 2900 Chickahominy Rd., Toano, with the Rev. Corwin R. Hammond officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Family and friends will assemble at 236 Bush Springs Rd. by noon on Saturday. Mrs. Sheird may be viewed in the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday.
