Frances H. Gibson, 97, of Hamlet, NC died Saturday, September 15th at Scotia Village, Laurinburg, NC. Mrs. Gibson was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Nathan Norman Gibson. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Evans Cleveland Hunsucker and Mrs. Vertie Cline Hunsucker; her oldest son, Norman Thomas Gibson; and a granddaughter, Martha Stewart Gibson.
Visitation will be held Friday, September 21, from 4-6 pm at Harrington Funeral Home, Hamlet, NC. Memorial Services will be held at 11 am on Saturday, September 22, at Scotia Village in Laurinburg with Rev. Neal Carter and Rev. Elizabeth Forester presiding. Graveside services will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, September 22, at Richmond Memorial Park, Rockingham, NC with Rev. Edgar Grooms and Rev. Ken Buckingham officiating.
Mrs. Gibson was born in Charlotte, NC and grew up both in Charlotte and Conover, NC. She was a 1936 graduate of Queens College, Charlotte, NC with a double major in Chemistry and Biology; was a registered medical technologist prior to marrying Nathan; was a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists; and college librarian. Mrs. Gibson was listed in Marquis' Who's Who of American Women and listed in Personalities of the South.
Mrs. Gibson was a member of the Hamlet First United Methodist Church for 72 years where she was a Sunday School teacher for 25 years and served as MYF counselor and a member of the Building Committee. Also, in Hamlet she was a member of the Athenian Book Club, DAR and an active member of the Parent Teachers Association for 25 years. She was awarded first place in acrylics painting by the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs, Inc. and received the Family History Book Award presented by the North Carolina Society of Historians in 1989 for her book entitled Genealogy of the Marcus Lafayette Cline Family.
In 1992, Frances and Nathan retired to Laurinburg. Mrs. Gibson was a member of The Scotia Village Rhythmaires and the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church. After her husband died in 1996, she served as a Director on the Board of Swink-Quality Oil Company.
Mrs. Gibson dedicated her life to God and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt. She enjoyed reading, painting, the theater, traveling and being with her family and friends. No words can convey the extent of a life so well lived.
The legacy of her wonderful life lives on in the lives of her children, Ms. Katie Gibson-Jones of Naples, FL and Williamsburg, VA, Dr. Sarah Gibson Hawes (husband Julian) of Pinehurst, and Nathan Cleveland Gibson (wife Elaine) of Knoxville, TN; in the lives of her grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Gibson of Charlotte, Joanna Gibson Glidewell (husband Brian) of Summerfield, NC, Teresa Negley (husband Steve) of Winter Haven, FL, William Jones (wife Molly) of Honolulu, HA, Ruth Little (husband Jim) of Hoschton, GA, Ron Jones (wife Angeles) of Tampa, FL, Richard Jones of Gothenburg, NE, Doug Jones of Tampa, FL, Karolee Towe (husband Joey) of Williamsburg, VA, and Jill Nicole Gibson of Knoxville, TN.; and in the lives of her great-grandchildren Hannah Elizabeth Glidewell and Emily Nicole Glidewell of Summerfield, NC, Thomas Negley of Washington, DC, Stewart Negley of Atlanta, GA, Rachel Little of Winter Haven, FL, Luke Little of Hoschton, GA, Katie Jones of Jacksonville, FL, Kalib Jones and Kehl Jones of Gothenburg¸NE, Taylor Jones of Tampa, FL, and Kali Panoutsos of Williamsburg, VA.; in the life of her daughter-in-law, Judith Hedgepeth Gibson of Hamlet; in the lives of her many nieces and nephews; and in the lives of her private nurses who were most attentive.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: First United Methodist Church, Hamlet; Laurinburg Presbyterian Church, Laurinburg; Scotia Village Foundation, Laurinburg; or to the .
Harrington Funeral Home in Hamlet and Rev. Linda Nelson, Scotia Village Chaplain, are assisting the Gibson family.
