Gary Lee Brumfield, 66, of Williamsburg, passed away March 20, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Anderson and Georgia Conner Brumfield of Salem, Va.

A graduate of Virginia Tech in Forestry, Gary followed a passion for gunsmithing and came to Colonial Williamsburg to become a Master Gunsmith, running the Gunsmith's Shop for eighteen years. He furthered the research about eighteenth century gunsmithing by publishing in the "Journal of Historical Armsmaking Technology," and later served as an editor for that same journal.

He coordinated and managed an annual gunsmithing school held at Western Kentucky University for twenty years. After leaving the Gunsmith's Shop, he continued with Colonial Williamsburg doing special projects, later becoming the Manager of Historic Area Communications. He retired from the foundation after 43 commendable years.

Gary loved Virginia, growing up in the Roanoke area. He climbed its mountains, biked its trails, explored its caves, fished its streams, canoed its white water, camped beside its rivers, hunted in its forests, drove top down along its by ways, and avidly explored its museums and historical sites. He shared his passion for the Virginia outdoors with his family and friends until he was absolutely unable to do so anymore.

Once Gary discovered a passion he would teach it: his own canoeing led to teaching others Red Cross canoe safety classes; his own volleyball playing led to coaching; and his love of gunsmithing led to teaching others his unique skills so that these skills would not be lost through time.

He will be remembered for the abiding love he had for his family and friends, his deep interest in history and its correct interpretation, his strength and perseverance through adversity, and his quiet humor.

His memory will be cherished by his beloved wife, Katie W. Brumfield; his dear son, Aaron C. Brumfield; and his sweet grandson, Sayer H. Brumfield; brother, F.A. Brumfield; sister, Helen McDaniel (Alfred), both of Salem; along with several nieces, nephews, and aunts.

The family will receive friends 11 a.m. -1 p.m. on Saturday, April 13 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg. A memorial service follows at 1 p.m. officiated by Don Seeterlin. A private family interment service will be held at a later date.

A memorial fund has been established by the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association to honor Gary. If so desired, send donations to NMLRA, Attn: Gary L. Brumfield Fund, P.O. Box 67, Friendship, IN 47021.
