George Aristotle Contos, 91, of Williamsburg, passed away March 15, 2013. He was born in Manhattan, N.Y. on Dec. 6, 1921. He was preceded in death by his son, Andrew Contos.
As a physical chemist, George did research for General Foods and Socony Mobil Oil Company. He worked in Washington for several defense groups, including the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
He also served as Scientific Advisor to Gen. Lyman Lemnitzer at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Paris from 1964 to 1967. He continued to work in the Pentagon until his retirement. In his retirement, he enjoyed gardening, cooking, photography, listening to classical music, traveling, and reading scientific journals.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Nancy C. Contos; his daughter, Dr. Melissa Clark and her husband, Dr. Ron Clark of Richmond; and his grandchildren, Kristen and Brian Clark of Richmond.
The family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, March 21 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg. Private funeral services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice, 11835 Fishing Point Dr., Suite 202, Newport News.
