She won a four year academic scholarship to the New Jersey State Teachers College (Douglass College) of Rutgers University and became certified to teach high school Math, English and German. On July 6th 1951, she married Donald E. Devanny, and was his loving wife for 52 years until his passing .She later earned a Masters degree as a reading specialist, and became certified in ESOL. She taught in the US, Brazil and Spain.
She has been a rock of support to her children through the challenges of life and her kind, supportive, forgiving and hard working ways remain an on-going example to us all. She was a lifelong learner, loved to read and help others learn. While some people wonder their whole lives if they have made a difference - Mom never had to wonder as her students and children told her. Loving, optimistic, diligent, always encouraging, she will be dearly missed.
A memorial service will be held at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church on Saturday, Nov 10th, 2012 at 2pm. Mom believed life was for living and would want no one to miss a child's game or an adventure with their spouse to attend this service. In lieu of flowers, Mom's favorite charities were Faith in Action, Literacy for Life and the Salvation Army.
