Gilbert Berry McCarter Obituary
WILLIAMSBURG - Gilbert Berry McCarter, age 92, of Williamsburg, VA, passed away on July 15, 2014. His loving wife of 65 years, Bess Rice McCarter, preceded him in death on November 13, 2010. Berry was born in Amarillo, TX on November 11, 1921, the son of Thomas and Jessie McCarter. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, earning the rank of Chief Petty Officer "X". From 1945-54, he worked for Naval Research and Ordnance Labs. The following year, he began his career with IBM, where he remained until his retirement in 1987. Berry earned his BSEE and MSEE degrees from the University of Texas, followed by attendance at the University of Western Ontario for Business Management. He was a proud member of the Texas Exes Alumni Association, as well as the Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu Engineering Honor Societies. He was also a lifetime member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Locally, he enjoyed membership at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, and the Kingsmill Golf Association, and was a strong supporter of Colonial Williamsburg through the Raleigh Tavern Society. He is survived by his two sons, Thomas Kerry McCarter and wife, Elizabeth Danneman McCarter, and Terry Owen McCarter and wife, Janice Bickford McCarter; one daughter, Sherry McCarter Stout and husband, William M. Stout, III; nine grandchildren, William, Sarah, Richard, Kelleen, Anne, Megan, Thomas, Michael, and Kristin; and nine great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to celebrate Berry's life at 2:00 PM on Saturday, July 19 at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, 215 Richmond Rd., with a reception following. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the University of Texas, school of Engineering, 301 E. Dean Keeton St., Austin, TX 78712. Online condolences may be offered at www.nelsencares.com.
