Gilbert Zimmerman, 94, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012, at his Woodhaven residence in the Williamsburg Landing retirement community in Williamsburg, with, Lila, his loving wife of 51 years, at his side. He was born in New York City on Dec. 9, 1917. Prior to moving to Williamsburg in 1995, he and Lila were longtime residents of Old Town Alexandria, where he was a strong advocate of preserving the city's unique historical and cultural qualities. Just before leaving Alexandria, he was recognized by the mayor and city council in appreciation for his outstanding efforts. He served as an officer in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and upon being discharged as a captain in 1946, he briefly worked for the U.S. Immigration & Naturalization Service in New York before being transferred to Washington, D.C. While there, he attended Georgetown University Law School at night, and upon his obtaining his law degree at the top of his class, he transferred to the U.S. Attorney's Office and worked there until his retirement. In addition to his wife, Lila, he is survived by his son, Gerry A. Zimmerman of Scottsdale, Ariz. At his wish, there will be no public memorial services. Following his cremation at Nelsen Funeral Home, his ashes will be sent for burial in a family plot in Wheatland, Mo.
