Henri Albert Joseph Julie, 74, of Williamsburg, passed away after a short and courageous battle with malignant melanoma on July 31, 2012. Born on May 8, 1938, on Mother's Day, to his parents, Adrien and Lillian Cadieux Julie, Henri made his arrival in the taxi cab just as it approached the front of the Woonsocket Hospital, Woonsocket, R.I. He grew up alongside one sister, Lucille Julie, also of Woonsocket.
Henri spent the formative years of his life in Woonsocket, joining the Navy at age 17. He was stationed aboard the USS Meredith, DD890, Destroyer, Norfolk, during 1955-57, followed by the USS Grand Canyon, AD28, Destroyer Tender, in Fall River, Mass., during 1957-59.
He met Christina Mabel Baker in October 1957 and they were married on Aug. 20, 1960. Henri served in the Air Force during 1960-64, stationed in Denver, Colo., Oscoda, Mich., and Goose Bay, Labrador.
After leaving the Air Force, the Julie family settled in Uniondale, Long Island, N.Y., later relocating to Sayville, Long Island, N.Y. Henri embarked on a 30-year career with Grumman Aerospace from 1965 to 1994.
Upon retirement, Henri and Christina moved to Williamsburg, where he was employed by Colonial Williamsburg Tazwell Club for four years, maintaining and repairing rental bikes. He became known simply as "The Bike Man."
Always active civically, Henri was the Worshipful Master of Connectquot F.&A.M. Masonic Lodge 838 in Sayville, Long Island, and served as secretary for 9 years. He was also a member of Williamsburg Masonic Lodge 6, A.F.&A.M.
Henri is survived by his loving wife, his sister, his godchildren, and many loving friends and neighbors. Thank you to all who helped Henri through his illness. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family will receive friends on Friday, Aug. 3, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd. A service will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
