Hugh J. Yarrington Obituary
HUGH J. YARRINGTON, 70, of Williamsburg, passed away Nov. 20, 2012 at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News after a year-long battle with multiple myeloma cancer.
He was born Sept. 9, 1942 in Neptune, NJ, the son of Hugh W. and Betsy M. Yarrington. Hugh spent most of his life in the Washington, D.C. area.
He graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School in 1960, where he was secretary of his Senior Class and quarterback on the football team. Hugh went on to graduate from Randolph-Macon College in 1964 with a major in Social Sciences and later earned his Juris Doctor degree from George Washington University Law Center in 1967.
After serving in the Army during the Vietnam War, Hugh returned to Washington in 1968 to work at Wilkinson, Cragun & Barker LLP before joining The Bureau of National Affairs in 1972 as an editor for its Environment Reporter. For more than 20 years, Hugh played a key role in helping BNA transform itself from a publisher to an information company until leaving in 1993 as the firm's senior vice president for Operations.
He moved to Chicago to work for CCH Inc, a tax and business law publisher, where he was General Counsel and later CEO until its successful sale to Dutch publishing giant Wolters Kluwer in 1995. Following the sale Hugh served on the firm's executive board along with running various business divisions until retiring in 2004.
Hugh was an avid golfer who belonged to Burning Tree Country Club in Bethesda and Kingsmill Resort and Golf Club in Williamsburg. He also loved reading and was never at a loss for an intellectual conversation and debate. Hugh particularly enjoyed discussing the latest developments in science and politics. He was a sought-after confidant and beloved friend to many.
He is survived by his sister, Betsy (Hank) Swain and his five children: Ashley Y. (Matt) McKee, Jill Y. (Marcus) Jones, Elizabeth A. (Brian Richards), and their mother, Kathleen F. Yarrington; and Stephen J. and Anna I. Yarrington, and their mother Hebe Kloosterman; and his two grandchildren, John Y. and Katherine E. McKee.
