Retired Police Maj. James David Ledford passed away Saturday, March 30, 2013 at home surrounded by his loving family.

He retired in 1995 as Assistant Chief of Police with the Newport News Police Department, after 26 years of service, and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was a Legionnaire of Moose Lodge 1711, a member of the the Lions Club, the American Legion Braxton Perkins Post 25, and a board member with LINK of Hampton Roads.
He was a distinguished graduate of Thomas Nelson Community College and St. Leo College. He also graduated from the FBI Academy.
Survivors include his fiancee, Tracie Ferris of Newport News; three children: Gina Gray (Scott) of Georgia, Theresa Bliss (Raymond) of Newport News, and Peter Danao (Cindy) of Poquoson; a brother, Jerry Boone; sisters Judy Haddock, Shirley Mason (Ronnie), and Jackie Hardinson (Tom), all of Chesapeake; and three grandchildren: Christopher Powell, Abbey Rivera-Grady, and Jacob Rivera-Grady.
Visitation will be held 7-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 5 in the funeral home chapel with Mike Stohler officiating. Burial will be private.
