His life began on July 25, 1941, the son of the late Mary and James Rodgers Sr.
He was a member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church and the church's Male Chorus.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Frankie Rodgers.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine G. Rodgers; his daughters, Gwendolyn Jeter, Wanda Vanderford and Tammy Smith, all of Union, S.C., and Melody Parson-Allen of Colorado Springs, Colo.; his sons, Weldon Rodgers of Union, S.C., Dr. Walter R. McCollumn of Maryland and Darryl Rodgers of Williamsburg; his godson, Larry Ruttley of Toano; his sisters, Dixie Camp and Katie Barrett, both of Williamsburg, and Sarah McMiller of Newport News; his brothers, Robert, Roosevelt, Paul, Jesse and Gerald Rodgers, all of Williamsburg; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives and caring friends.
A funeral service, celebrating the life he lived, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, with the Rev. Roland Cuffie officiating. Interment will follow in Williamsburg Memorial Park. Family and friends will assemble at 459 Fenton Mill Rd. by 1 p.m. Saturday.
