Joan Reed Weir

Obituary Condolences

Joan Reed Weir of Williamsburg passed away on September 29, 2012 following a brief illness. She was 89.
Joan was a native of Cardiff, Wales and was privileged to have dual citizenship in Great Britain and the United States. She met and married Robert W-M Weir, during WWII while he served as an officer in the RAF. They were married in England and following the war enjoyed the adventures of a US Army family while being stationed in the UK and Italy during the reconstruction period. They travelled throughout Europe and parts of the Middle East.
After the family settled in Williamsburg Joan, as a busy wife and mother worked for Dow Chemical before eventually joining her husband and son as a Colonial Williamsburg employee. She was a costumed hostess and later also worked at the original Crafthouse. She passionately studied the life and times of the colonial capital and made every effort to incorporate its rich history into the family home. She was an avid reader, appreciated fine music and had a magical touch in the art of crewel work.
Joan and Robert (Bob) who predeceased her in 1985 had 3 children Robert W-M Weir, Jr. (deceased) Wendolyn Weir Hamrick and Charles Reed Weir. Joan is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, a twin sister Joyce who lives in Wales and numerous nieces and nephews.
Anyone wishing to celebrate the life of Joan may make donations to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
A private service for the family is planned.
