Obituary Condolences

John Edward "Jack" Bailey, 86, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2012 at his home in Aquia Harbour in Stafford, Virginia. A resident of Williamsburg for many years, Mr. Bailey attended Matthew Whaley High School and matriculated at William and Mary after his service in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. During his service, he was a tail gunner on a B-24 training for activities in Europe as the war ended. Under the apprenticeship of Alonzo Thomas "Red" Vaughan he conducted historical preservation and construction management for Colonial Williamsburg, and later at Shirley Plantation, Westover Church, and other important historic sites. In later years he was a contractor and consultant in northern Virginia.
Mr. Bailey is survived by Arleen Condy Bailey, his wife of 25 years, and his son and daughter-in-law John Edward Bailey, Jr. and Catherine Johnson Bailey of Arlington, Va. He has two grandchildren, Richard Shelton Bailey of Elkins, WV and Meagan Bethea Bailey of Arlington, Va. Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his son, David Vaughan Bailey. His first marriage to Elizabeth "Tootie" Clopton Vaughan of Williamsburg ended in divorce.
