Lawrence Grayson Fowler, 92, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2013. He was born in Granville County, N.C., on July 31, 1920, and moved to Newport News in 1941. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emma Grace Sossamon and Levy Astor Fowler Sr., and his brothers, Levy Astor Fowler, Jr. and Carey Sossamon Fowler. He is survived by his wife, Sammie Staton Fowler; his sister, Emma Jean Fowler Gentry (George) of Houston; his daughter, Susan Powell Fowler Moorman (Kenneth) of Williamsburg.

Mr. Fowler attended Louisburg College and the University of North Carolina. He was a World War II veteran and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. He spent 50 years in the banking industry on the Peninsula, lastly at Old Point National Bank in Williamsburg. Following his banking retirement, he co-founded and co-owned RE/MAX Capital in Williamsburg, retiring from this business after 10 years. He was a past president of the Warwick Kiwanis Club in Newport News and had been active in Williamsburg in the Chamber of Commerce, DAV, Kiwanis Club, and as a board member of the Salvation Army. He was a member of the James River Country Club and, at one time, an active member of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, both in Newport News.
In addition, he is survived and deeply loved by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Meredith Susan Strahan (Eric) of Chesapeake and son, Lane; Grayson Lee Gilmore (Jennifer) of Atlanta and children, Grace, Henry, and Davis; Caroline Fowler Shea (Timothy) of Chesapeake and son, Austin; Jamie Lewis Slawski (Alexander) of Dallas and children, A.J., Charles Lawrence, and Annabel. Also surviving are niece, Joanna Gentry Ambs (Loran), and nephews, George Hudspeth Gentry III (Christie), Gregory Thomas Fowler (Carolyn), William Stephen Fowler (Terri), Walter Wayne Fowler (Diane), John Russell Fowler (Lucy), Lee Allen Fowler (Cecilia), Larry Gene Fowler, and their families. Other devoted family members include Brenda and Edward Bergmann of Virginia Beach and children, Kelli and Samantha; Jack and Diane Mann of Missouri and children, Casey, Logan, and Dylan.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 20, at 2 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, with burial to follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
