Mamie Via Allen Obituary
Mamie Elizabeth Stahle Via Allen, 89, a longtime resident of the Peninsula, died in Williamsburg on Oct. 3, 2011. Mrs. Allen had been residing at Chambrel of Williamsburg.
She is survived by her husband, retired Lt. Col. Lee Allen; two sons, Bill Via and Craig Via of Richmond; three daughters-in-law, Ann Via, Suzi Via, and Gail Barontini of Orlando, Fla.; one son-in-law, Steve Allen of Colorado; one brother-in-law, Gene Allen of Newport News; and eight beloved grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was the class speaker for Newport News High School Class of 1939. She graduated from Mary Washington College before becoming secretary to the vice president of the Newport News Shipyard. She was married to the late retired Lt. Col. James Bernard Via, with whom she lived abroad during various military assignments.
She worked as a professional model and retail sales associate for Thalhimer's Department Store prior to assuming her position as the assistant executive director of the Hampton Clean City Commission. She was the former president of the Mary Washington College Peninsula Alumni Association and a member of the Newicton Garden Club, Newport News Women's Club, and Hidenwood Presbyterian Church.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Peninsula Fine Arts Center and to Mary Washington University.
