Mary Tobacoff Obituary
At 105 years old, Mary Tobacoff passed away peacefully on Dec. 9, 2012, at her residence at Patriots Colony in Williamsburg.
Mary was born on March 12, 1907, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduated from Adelphi University in 1929 with a passion for mathematics and the classics. She went on to work for the New York Telephone Company (now Verizon) for over 40 years. Mary volunteered during World War II for the American Red Cross and received a citation from the Army for her services. Volunteering was in Mary's nature starting in childhood and followed her throughout her life. She also found time to travel all of Europe and had Metropolitan Opera subscriptions for over 50 years.
In 1990, Mary moved to Williamsburg, where she loved the small town atmosphere. She was one of the first residents of Patriots Colony and was instrumental in organizing a bridge group. She also became a member of Bruton Parish Church and helped with the church bulletins, Altar Guild, and became a member of Daughters of the King.
Mary always found a way to live the good life and take care of herself. She was an inspiration to all and will be missed dearly by her many friends.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 18, in the Great Hall at Patriots Colony at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Williamsburg Christian Academy, 101 Schoolhouse Lane, Williamsburg VA 23188. Online condolences may be expressed at nelsencares.com.
