Ruth Eleanor Steer Obituary
SAN DIEGO - Ruth Eleanor Steer, nee Walczak, 87, died in Vero Beach, Florida on April 12, 2014, after having lived a full and happy life. Born in Buffalo N.Y., Ruth was the daughter of Dr. Stephen and Genevieve Walczak. She graduated from Marymount College in Tarrytown, N.Y. with a major in interior design, which remained a talent and passion of hers throughout her life. She married James W. Steer of Syracuse, N.Y. in 1949 and had six children. Ruth was a consummate host, and planned elaborate parties and charitable events in Buffalo. When she moved to Williamsburg in the 1970s to own and operate an inn near Colonial Williamsburg, she put her hospitality and event planning skills to work to make that hotel a great success, bringing in notable celebrities such as the Rolling Stones. Ruth pursued her love of painting and sculpture later in life, focusing on portraiture and landscape. As in everything she put her mind to, Ruth was successful in her endeavor, creating interesting works of art. Diagnosed with cancer three years ago, Ruth faced her illness with the same strength and determination she applied to her entire life, maintaining a brave and cheerful outlook. She died peacefully in Vero Beach, Florida surrounded by her family and her excellent caregivers. She is predeceased by her parents, brother (Paul Walczak) and husband and is survived by her six children (James W. Steer, Jr., Janine Smith, Jonathan Steer, Jocelyn Steer, Johanna Ketron and Jacque Steer) and their spouses, twelve grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the VNA Hospice Care of Indian River County.
