WILLIAMSBURG - Dr. Mary McDonald Brittain, 83, of Toano, VA, passed away on April 25, 2014. She was born in Sheffield, AL, on April 19, 1931, and was adopted by Mark and Nelle McDonald. Dr. Brittain graduated from Sacred Heart in Atlanta, GA. She earned an A.B. from Agnes Scott College, an M.A. from Emory University, and Ph.D. from the University of Miami. While enrolled at Emory University, she met the love of her life, Dr. Clay Brittain. They were married in 1962. Mary's passions were education and reading. Her career ranged from elementary school teacher to college professor, retiring from Virginia Commonwealth University as a Professor Emeritus in 1995. She is survived by her son, Mark Brittain and fiancée Kathy Begley; her daughter, Eleanor "Nell" Stover and husband Nathan, grandchildren Kirsten, Georgia, and Clay "Gus" Stover, and companion Mrs. Belinda Mack. Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 3rd at Hickory Neck Episcopal Church, 8300 Richmond Road, Toano, VA.
