WEST POINT - Max Louis ('Doc', 'Papoo', 'Mickey') Crandall, 86, of Barhamsville, VA passed away June 20, 2014. Max was born on September 22, 1927 in Linden, MI. He received a degree in Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University in 1953. He conducted Veterinary practices in Warrenton, VA, and Oaktown, IN. He served as Veterinary Inspector for the District of Columbia Health Department and Staff Veterinarian with the Department of Agriculture. In 1966, he joined the Food and Drug Administration working in Detroit, MI and San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1988, he retired after working at his position in Rockville, MD for 9 years. He was also a retired Air Force Reserve Lt. Colonel. After retirement, he worked part time at Toano Animal Clinic, volunteered at Ft. Eustis ENT Clinic for over 20 years, and enjoyed working for Burns Security at the State Fair, NASCAR, and Strawberry Hills Races. He remained very active and involved in his community. Max was preceded in death by his parents Kenneth and Vinnie Crandall, a brother Patrick Crandall and son-in-law Gene McDaniel. He is survived by his wife of 68 years Donna Crandall; his children Carole Hughes (Jim), Michael (Pam), Jill McDaniel, and Patrick (Donna); eight grandchildren, and many, many great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24th at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th Street, West Point, VA 23181. Interment followed in Tabernacle United Methodist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made, in lieu of flowers, to Tabernacle United Methodist Church (20051 Tabernacle Road, Barhamsville, VA 23011), where he was a member, for use in their Food Pantry or Thrift Spot in Barhamsville, VA, or to Riverside Hospice (12420 Warwick Blvd, Suite 6E, Newport News, VA 23606).
