Thomas Henry Francis Hughes, 91, of Williamsburg passed away on April 2, 2012. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary McArdle, and his brother, John Hughes.

Thomas enlisted in the Navy Air Corps in 1941, was commissioned as an ensign, and became a flight instructor for the next four years. After receiving his master's degree from Catholic University, he was employed by U.S. News & World Report magazine and remained there for 35 years. He retired as the editor of the Economic Unit in 1982 and moved from Washington, D.C. to Williamsburg. He was a friend of Bill Wilson's for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Sommer Hughes; three children, Thomas Sommer Hughes and his wife, Frances, Mary Ann Cox and her husband, Daniel, and Kathleen Callanan and her husband, Armand Beaudoin; three grandchildren, Caitlin and Daniel Beaudoin, and Grace Hughes; and a sister, Sarah Lynch, and her husband, Eugene.
A Funeral Mass will be offered on Monday, April 9, at 9 a.m. at St. Bede Catholic Church, 3686 Ironbound Rd., with a private interment service in the St. Bede Church Columbarium.
