Josephine Whitby Murphy died Oct. 20 at age 94. She was the widow of Colonel James Malcolm Murphy, a career Army officer who passed away in 2007.

Mrs. Murphy loved to travel and served with her husband in numerous foreign and domestic assignments, including those in France, Italy, Japan, Thailand and Hawaii. Col. and Mrs. Murphy had lived in Williamsburg since 1997, where she had many friends.
Mrs. Murphy was the daughter of the late William R. Whitby and Christina Hogarth Whitby of Emporia, Hopewell and Fredericksburg. She is survived by her son, James M. Murphy Jr., daughter-in-law Anne M. Murphy, and her granddaughter, Mary C. Murphy, all of Washington, D.C.; also a sister, Lois Smith of Hopewell, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 19 at Patriots Colony Retirement Community in Williamsburg. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26.
