Sallie Carin Melvin Obituary
Sallie Carin Melvin of Williamsburg died unexpectedly Feb. 14, 2013. She was born in Stamford, Conn., on Sept. 10, 1929. She held an AB degree from the University of Rochester (N.Y.) and an MBA from New York University. Her distinguished business career in New York included work for NBC, Grey Advertising, and the Merrill Lynch firm. She served as market research manager for Chemical Bank (later Chase Bank) and was named a vice president of the bank in 1976. She held leadership positions with several professional organizations and with the YWCA of the City of New York. She was honored as a distinguished alumna of Rochester University and served on the Trustees Council. Before retirement, she also earned credentials as a certified financial planner.
Volunteer service to others continued more fully after her retirement to Kingsmill in 1989. She offered her skills in strategic planning to nonprofit agencies such as the United Way, Christopher Wren Society, S.C.O.R.E. and the Williamsburg Country Club. She was also a VITA volunteer income tax preparer for many years. She served as elder, planner, and clerk of session for the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church.
Always the athlete, she was more than proficient at swimming, golf, archery, and bowling. She had been a member of Woodway Country Club in Darien, Conn., Williamsburg Country Club, and the Kingsmill Golf Club.
She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph L. and Carin R. Melvin. She is survived by her brother, Robert J. Melvin of Dallas, Texas; cousins, Barbara Melvin of Ithaca, N.Y., Parker Melvin and family of Ithaca, Jane Melvin and family of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; friend, Ellen Lorensen of Williamsburg; and many other cousins.
A memorial service will be held Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. in Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. Memorial contributions may be directed to the church, 215 Richmond Rd., Williamsburg VA; or to the .
