Wilford "Bill" N. Herndon, Jr. 75, of Charlottesville, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013 at his home. Born February 15, 1938 in Chase City, Va., he was the son of the late Wilford N. Herndon, Sr and Marandie Brankley Herndon.
Bill earned his Associate Degree from Richmond Professional Institute, now VCU. He was a member of the Lynchburg Jaycees. In 1971, Mr Herndon opened Fabrics Unlimited, and served as president and owner until his passing.
He was a very private man whom his family knew to be very generous. Bill took great delight making anonymous, generous donations to various community causes and charities. Until the last couple of years it was a real pleasure to share the fruits of his vegetable garden with his friends and acquaintances. Bill would make time to enjoy watching the Virginia Cavaliers play ball or watch the NASCAR races. He also enjoyed being on the beaches along the North Carolina coast.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carolyn Darden Herndon of Charlottesville; his two daughters, Elizabeth Leigh and her husband Andrew L. Frame of Charlottesville, and Rebecca Cring and her husband W. Andrew Henkel of Fredericksburg: three beloved grandchildren, Carrie Virginia, Sam Atwell and Henry Charles Henkel: and sister Sandra Herndon Fuller and her husband Rawley of Burlington, N.C., three nephews and his special Lab, "Juniper."
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 14 at the Hill & Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Gene Baker officiating. Contributions may be made to Church of Our Saviour, 1165 Rio Rd East, Charlottesville, 22901, or the Charlottesville SPCA, PO Box 7047, Charlottesville, 22906.
