Fred Buffin Calhoun Obituary
Fred Buffin Calhoun, 82, went to his eternal home with his Lord and Savior Christ Jesus on April 17, 2013 after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage as a result of a fall due to Parkinson's and dementia. He was a faithful servant in many church activities and ministries throughout his life, but enjoyed singing for the glory of God the most with his beautiful tenor voice.
Fred was born in Montgomery County, N.C. and grew up in Haywood County, N.C., where he was very active in many school activities and sports. He received a music scholarship to Western Carolina University. After serving in the Army he worked at the Newport News Shipyard and was on the Newport News police force before starting his own sign company in Hampton.
Fred enjoyed fishing, hunting, training bird dogs and retrievers, golfing and flying. He was an instrument rated pilot and accomplished artist. Fred was blessed with a gentle, kind, and loving spirit.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Dee Ann; his children, Janet Chambers of Canton, N.C.; Cliff Calhoun of Alpharetta, Ga.; and Jeff Calhoun of Denver; his sisters, Kathleen Perry of Raleigh, N.C. and Julia Ann Wilson of Winston Salem, N.C.
Fred was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Elizabeth Calhoun; his sister, Mary Ellen Jaynes; his brother, John C. Calhoun; and two sons, Randy and Cranston Calhoun.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 27 at Williamsburg Community Chapel, 3899 John Tyler Hwy, Williamsburg. Visitation and a reception will follow the service at the church. Interment will be at a later date in his wife's family plot in Chiefland, Fl.
In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the Williamsburg Community Chapel Building Fund or to Riverside Hospice at 12420 Warwick Blvd, Suite 6E, Newport News, 23606. Condolences may be registered online at www.nelsencares.com and www.vagazette.com
