Frank, 96, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 25, 2013 at home. He was born in Harlingen, Texas on June 4, 1917 to Don Cecilio Belmonte Garcia and Dona Silvina Oliva Vela.
The Garcia family settled in Harlingen in 1916, where they established a tailoring, hat blocking, and dry cleaning/laundry business on West Jackson Street-one of the first minority-owned businesses in the city.
Frank enlisted in the Army
where he served with the 5th in the Italian campaign from 1943 to 1945.
Back home, he help spearhead the fund drive to build Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Harlingen in 1947. Frank worked for Elrod Lumber Company until it closed in 1960 and then at Garcia Cleaners before leaving for California in 1963 to work for Yosemite Park & Curry Co. until his retirement in 1984 and return to Harlingen.
He is survived by his brother Jose Garcia (Marta) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Rudy Garza Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, 28 August 2013 from 10AM to 9PM with a rosary prayed at 7PM.
The Mass of Christian burial will be on Thursday, August 29, 2013 departing the funeral home at 9:30AM for a 10AM mass to be celebrated at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Harlingen. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park, San Benito.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen.
