SANTA MONICA, TX. -- Juan G. Garcia, 83, entered eternal rest on November 27, 2013 at Retama Manor Nursing Home in Raymondville, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents Manuel Garcia and Guadalupe Garza Garcia and Abundio and Refugia Garcia. He was also preceded in death by his sister Maria G. Gonzales, and brothers, Fidel, Ismael, Tomas, Manuel, and Eleazar Garcia.
Juan was born on June 24, 1930 at Tres Norias Ranch in Santa Monica, TX. He graduated from Lyford High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War (1950-1952) and was assigned to the 40th Infantry Division 224th Regiment, Heavy Mortar Company where he served in the front lines (Iron Triangle). He received two Service Infantry Combat Medals.
Juan was a lifelong resident and farmer in Willacy County. He was a member of the Santa Monica Catholic Church and served as a School Board Member for the Lyford Consolidated Independent School District for 11 years. Juan also served on the Willacy County Beef Committee, Stillman Water Board, South Texas School Board, Willacy County Housing Authority Board, the Farmers Home Administration Committee and the Rio Grande Valley Municipal Water Board.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Judith Garcia of Santa Monica, TX, one son, Juan Manuel (Belinda) Garcia of Washington, DC, two daughters, Velma Garcia of Santa Monica, Cynthia (Omar) Garza, Georgetown, TX, four-grandchildren, Nella Felice Garcia-Urban (Pierre), Juan Nicolas Garcia, Lauren Nicole Garcia, and Lucas Omar Garza, and two-great-grandchildren Mikaela Jo and Pierre Juan Urban. His brothers Jose Abundio (Jeanne) Garcia and Enrique (Amelia) Garcia, Pasadena, TX, Miguel (Emma) Garcia, Ernesto (Oralia) Garcia and Alfredo (Merida) Garcia, Santa Monica, TX, and one sister Herlinda (Agustin) Alfonzo, League City, TX. The spouses of his deceased brothers, Delia Garcia, Harlingen, TX, Vera Garcia, Austin, TX, Ofelia and Gloria Garcia, Raymondville, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.
Honored to be his pallbearers will be his nephews Eleazar "Yogi" Garcia, Ernie Garcia, Michael Garcia, Joe Alex Leal, Jaime Leal, and Rick Cantu. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at Retama Nursing Home in Raymondville, TX and the Odyssey Healthcare of South Texas.
Visitation will be held on November 29, 2013 from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm with family accepting friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm at Good Shepherd Funeral Home.
Funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Gabriel Ezeh and Father Richard McDonald on November 30, 2013 at 10:00 am at Prince of Peace Catholic Church 8412 Park Ave, Lyford, TX.
A funeral procession will lead to Juan's final resting place at the Tres Norias Ranch Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers his children ask donations be made to the Santa Monica Catholic Church, PO Box 460, Lyford, TX 78569.
