SAN BENITO, TX.-
Janet Dwire Mathis, 74, passed away on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen.
Janet was born October 24, 1936 in Cuero, Texas to Arlis Dwire and Elizabeth Smith Hutson. She attended San Marcos Academy and was employed with M & M Sales, and then Janet worked in real estate before retiring. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Harlingen and Harlingen Sorority. Janet had a passion for horses and enjoyed traveling aboard and spending time with her boys.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her aunt Mary Jewel Smith.
Janet is survived by her sons, Thomas E. Mathis IV and wife Teena K., William C. Mathis and wife Laura F. and Michael L. Mathis; grandchildren, Thomas E. Mathis V, Jeffrey B. Mathis of Houston, Matthew D. Mathis of Houston, TX, Collin C. Stewart of Harlingen, Dustin L. Mathis of Harlingen, Krystina L. Mathis of Harlingen, and Michelle J. Mathis of Harlingen; six great grandchildren; brother, Charles A. Dwire of Portland, Oregon and Rodney P. Dwire of Houston, TX; and former husband Tom Mathis III.
A celebration of Janet's life will be held Friday, February 11, 2011, 11 a.m., at First Baptist Church of Harlingen with Rev. Chris Hall and Dudley Blakeney officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be Thomas F. Mathis V, Jeffrey B. Mathis, Matthew D. Mathis, Collin C. Stewart, and Dustin L Mathis.
For those desiring to do so, memorial contributions may be made to My Father's House is a House of Prayer (Foundation) in remembrance of Janet Mathis, P.O. Box 1766 San Benito, Texas 78586.

I am so sorry to hear about Janet's passing. She was my first computer student and we met in 1998. We became good friends almost immediately. I will miss her sweet smile and joyful laughter. She is in God's hands now. I will miss seeing Tristan too. Love to you all.

I enjoyed Janet very much.....she would come in to my shop and use the exercise machines at Healthy Lifestyle......she was a sweet lady that I thought a lot of...she would always talk about her gandchildren and little dog........I will miss her a lot.

Tommy, Billy and Michael - I was so sad to hear Aunt Janet passed away last Saturday, Feb 5. It was Dad's Birthday and rememberances of him along with your mom made it an especially sad and mournful day. I prayed and prayed, but trust that God saw fit to bring her home because he needs her, even though I know you all will miss her so. I have the fondest memories of her when I was growing up and will never forget her humor, directness, kindness and caring nature. She wrote me the sweetest Christmas card and I was hoping to visit with her in the spring. When I think of her I see her laughing and smiling and joking about something funny. Tommy, Billie, Mike: Our deepest sympathy on the loss of your precious Mother. What I remember is that Janet loved her family and spent time with them. Her life was spent making a difference in the lives of others. She will be missed, but will see her again in perfect health in Heaven. God Bless you and your families during this difficult time.
