Norman Kenneth Fitzgerald was called home by the Lord on March 22, 2013, at MJA Assisted Living in McAllen, TX. He was born on September 21, 1926 in Dallas, TX.
Fitzgerald received his early education in Bangs, TX. After high school he attended Blinn Jr. College where he received an Associate Degree. In 1949 he attended Sam Houston State University where he obtained his Bachelor's of Science Degree. Later he attended Texas A & I University in Kingsville, TX where he obtained a Masters of Science and his School Administration Certification.
``Fitz', as he was known by his friends, was a life time member of the Confederate Air Force and participated in many civic organizations.
In 1946, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He served in the Pacific and fought aboard a Heavy Cruiser in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. He was honorably discharged in 1948.
In 1950, He married Elnora Irene Schritter and enjoyed many year together.
Fitz started his teaching career in Edcouch-Elsa as a coach, and as a classroom teacher.
Later he moved to Mercedes where he was employed by the Mercedes School System. He served as a classroom teacher, principal, and superintendent of schools.
For many years Fitz was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mercedes. He was an avid Sportsman, enjoyed traveling with his wife and was dedicated to his profession.
Later, Fitz was employed by the Harlingen CISD as a principal and as a deputy superintendent of schools until his retirement in 1987.
Fitz is survived by his sister-in-law, Wanda Fitzgerald of Dallas, TX and his dear friends, Tom and Emma Forrest of Harlingen. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Edna Sarah Fitzgerald; step-father, Lon H. Baker; his wife, Elnora Irene Fitzgerald; sister, Betty Jean Warner, a brother, Robert D. Fitzgerald; and brother-in-law, Edward Warner.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Graveside services only will be held Wednesday, March 27, 2013, 10:00 a.m., at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria with Full Military Honors under the auspices of American Legion Post 205.
