Yvonne "Voni" D. Hurt, age 52, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015 at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance in Edinburg after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on Aug. 24, 1963, in Weslaco she was the daughter of Genaro and Hortensia (Villarreal) Ramos. She was a 1981 graduate of Mercedes High School, where she participated in numerous activities, including serving as member of the school's dance team, the "Dancing Debonaires." Yvonne studied Business Management at the University of Texas - Pan American. She most recently worked as a fourth grade teacher at Dr. R.E. Margo Elementary in Weslaco, where she strived to inspire her students to embrace their individuality. "This is what I live by, [and] I want my daughter, granddaughter, [and] all of my students to live by it as well," wrote Yvonne in a Facebook post last May, accompanied by a photo with a quote from Dr. Seuss that read: "Why fit in when you were born to stand out?" Yvonne added, "I bet a bunch of amazing [and] accomplished individuals will result from an attitude like this!"
As her family, friends and colleagues can attest, Yvonne was one of those remarkable and gifted people. Described as "sunshine on a rainy day" and great company to have around, Yvonne will be fondly remembered as a loving, kind and caring person with a bright smile, effervescent personality, and an honest disposition. She was natural born comedian who could easily fill a room with laughter with sidesplitting jokes and extraordinary sense of humor. Most importantly, Yvonne was someone who always put others before herself.
A loving and devoted mother and grandmother, she dedicated her entire life to her family and friends. Throughout the years, Yvonne -- a skilled do-it-yourselfer and craftsperson -- shared her talents with those around her, volunteering to do everything from create centerpieces for an aunt's birthday party to hand make hair bows for her granddaughter's cheerleading squad. She will be sadly missed by those who were blessed to have known her.
Yvonne is survived by her mother and father, Hortensia and Genaro Ramos; her brother and sister-in-law, Kevin J. and Luisa Hurt; her sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Buckley Sanchez; her brother- and sister-in-law Joey and Christine Hurt; her daughter, Jenna L. Muldrow; her granddaughter Ava L. Contreras; and her nieces and nephew Seyhan Sanchez, Peyton Sanchez, Teygan Sanchez, Andrea Hurt, Taira Hurt, Kirin Hurt, Brooklyn Alvarado, and Kevin Andrew Hurt, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Family, friends, and others whose lives Yvonne touched are invited to the Hawkins Funeral Home, 2222 E. Business 83, Weslaco. Public viewing will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. with a rosary scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Monday Sept. 14, 2015. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015 in Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Mercedes at 10 a.m with burial services held immediately afterward at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria.
