PILKINGTON - Ralph Thomas 1923-2014 The family of Ralph Thomas Pilkington is sad to announce the passing at the age of 90 peacefully in his sleep at his home on January 17, 2014 in West Vancouver. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 yrs Sharenn Pilkington (2004) sisters Ethel, Lil, Flo, and Glady. He is survived by his daughter Rhedia K Stark (Randy Stark), son Clarke Pilkington (Lori Brown), grandchildren Jalline (Tino), Dalen (Stephanie), Jestene and great grandchild Vhera. In the early 1900's Ralph's parents Thomas and Rachel Pilkington emigrated from England to Canada and resided in Summerland for a brief period before moving to Vancouver and starting a family of 4 girls and 1 boy Ralph Pilkington on June 5 1923. Ralphs father Thomas was a blacksmith and had a shop in Gastown along with a partner and around 1927 the partnership ended with Thomas selling his interest in the company. Shortly after this Thomas won the Irish Sweepstakes Lottery and he and Rachel went back to England to collect his winnings and visit relatives. While on this trip he went to Manchester to purchase a state of the art Air Hammer used in the blacksmith industry and had it shipped back to Vancouver. When they returned home from England and with the arrival of the new piece of equipment he set up shop in Coal Harbor as it was the industrial hub for the marine industry under the name of Pilkington Blacksmith and later Pilkington's Metal Marine Ltd. Pilkington's Metal Marine is still in business today and is still family managed. Ralph was a great father, friend and an enjoyable person to be with and will be missed by all. He had a passion for fishing and hunting and would every year provide his great home smoked salmon to those who knew him. The family would like to thank Ralph's caregivers Elsa and Lowell for the past two years of all of their fantastic care and loving support until his passing. There will be a celebration of life at First Memorial Boal Chapel 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver Friday February 21 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the BC Cancer Agency or charity of your choice.
