WALLIS, Richard (Rick) Surrounded by love and on his own terms Rick slipped peacefully away Thursday Sept. 26, 2013. In the last 5 years he lived with cancer and faced challenging treatments with strength, humour and a determination to embrace life. 'Mr. Resilient' was able to enjoy good times with family and friends in his three favourite places-home, Birch Bay and Hawaii. Highlights included the birth of a grandchild, Evan Richard, his joyful tonic for 4 years, and the renewal of his vows on the sands of Kauai with Joanne, his West Van High School sweetheart and wife of almost 44 years. After taking early retirement from Bartle & Gibson, Rick enjoyed road trips in his FX, gave up on golf and took up cooking. He continued to cook, enjoy food, swap recipes and stories until his final months. Rick is survived by his loving wife Joanne, beloved daughter and son-in-law Christy and David Leslie and grandson Evan, steadfast twin sister Lynne Johnston, devoted aunt Ruth Wade and many wonderful cousins. Rick had known Joanne for 50 years, so her extended Woodworth, Easdown and MacAulay families played an important caring role in his life and illness. Rick and Joanne established many enduring friendships starting in high school and the family is very thankful for their friends' unfailing support. Rick's constant love for his family and friends touched all who knew him. A special thank you to all his wonderful doctors, nurses and caregivers whose skills and care extended the length and quality of his life and allowed him to be at home until his final weeks. There will be a Celebration of Life on Tuesday, October 8th at 2 pm at West Vancouver Presbyterian Church, 29th and Marine. In lieu of flowers, donations in Rick's memory to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation directed to the Dr Paul Klimo Oncology Clinic or to the North Shore Hospice would be welcome.
