The happiness you felt while taking these photos as you fished the Harrison River, became a reality for me recently when Peter, Mike and I camped and fished that same River. I was awe struck by the sheer numbers and beauty of all the eagles and salmon, not to mention the noisy seagulls. Without you it was incomplete, but I felt your presence strongly, and missed you more than ever. Thank you, Derek for leaving all the photos, and memories of the joy you experienced with your fishing and photography. They are truly a comfort. God Bless You, Mom

Though Derek and I did not grow up together, our bond was forged through family. In photos of our times together, in Colorado and in Vancouver, I remember summers, Christmas vacations and youth. In photos of Derek as a man, fishing, smiling in the wilderness, I see part of myself. I will miss you cousin.

Although we never knew Derek, we know his father...we see John in his eyes. We are praying for John and Debbie for what must surely be an awful loss. Derek's apparent love for the land, water and life is evident in the photos. That kind of energy never passes.

Derek. You were to me like a little brother and I felt always so honored when you came to me for advise. Where ever you are, I hope love surrounds you for you deserve it so much. Thank you for all that you did for me, for us: All those fun camping and fishing trips, taking my mum on a boat ride, helping my son with fishing, being such a wonderful inspiration when I stopped smoking, and trusting me enough with personal fears and worries. I will never forget you and you will always be smiling in my heart, and my love goes with you.
