Evelyn Bertha Hosgood May 30, 1917- February 12, 2013 Hosgood, Evelyn Bertha, nee Austin

Evelyn Hosgood passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 12, at the age of 95. she leaves behind her daughters, Maggie and Patty; son Leonard, granddaughter Barbara Hayward (Mike), grandsons James (Trish) and Daniel, great-grandchildren Shayla, Tommy and Luke, who was born on her last birthday. Ev's husband of almost 65 years, Douglas, died on February 4th, 2009. She missed him terribly.

Evelyn was born in the village of Haliburton, Ontario, the 5th of five children, and only daughter to Wellington and Maggie Austin. At seventeen she left the village and went to Toronto to nursing school at Sick Children's Hospital. After graduating she worked in Toronto and met the love of her life, Doug, whom she married nine weeks later. Doug, an RAF airman on assignment to the Commonwealth Air Training Plan, was soon sent back to England. Ev followed him across the Atlantic. They lived in England and eventually decided to return to Canada, settling in Burnaby.

Evelyn had many talents: singer with the Bach Choir and Pacific Chorale, Life Master in Duplicate Bridge, seamstress and decorator. She was a longtime member of the United Church and lifetime member of the United Church women.

Travel became a major pleasure for Ev and Doug after he retired. Together they produced a wonderful garden which their grandchildren enjoyed immensely. Ev battled with Alzheimer's Disease but never lost her common sense or her sense of humour. She lived at the Windermere Care Center where she received wonderful care from men and women who 'joined her family'.

A celebration of Evelyn's life will be held at Dunbar Heights United Church, 3524 West 24th Ave., Vancouver, on Saturday, February 23rd, at 2 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations to First United Church, Covenant House or the Salvation Army would be appreciated.
