DOBSON, Florence Shirley Meays Crawford
March 25, 1925- February 14, 2013
Faithful and loving wife, mother, friend, reader, churchgoer and lover of birds (especially cardinals). Shirley died peacefully, surrounded by her family, when her sharp mind finally gave in after many years of dementia. She was reunited with her loving husband Bill on Valentine's Day. She was born on her family's farm in Goodeve, Saskatchewan delivered by her grandmother who was the local midwife. Shirley finished high school at 16 to move to Yorkton to start work as a legal secretary, spending many happy years with the RCMP. In 1955, she moved to the Hague to work for the Canadian embassy. It was there that she met and married her "handsome husband", Dr. William Glaister (Bill) Dobson, a UWO grad from Ontario. Shirley and Bill settled in Vineland, Ontario where Bill practised family medicine and Shirley helped to run the office and ran their family of 5 delightful children. Their happy retirement was brief as Bill was soon diagnosed with Parkinson's and Shirley with Alzheimer's. Some of Shirley's favourite things were: Scotch mints, her family, moderation in all things (except chocolate), clear sunny Saskatchewan-like winter days, looking out her south-facing window to see the deer and the many many birds and occasional fox that visited their farm in Jordan, watching Masterpiece Theatre with her daughters, enjoying a glass of Canadian red wine, the printed word (books, newspapers, magazines, signs of any and all kinds), weekend get aways, lunches and chats on the phone with "The Golden Girls" (of Vineland) and "The Sunshine Sisters" (of Jordan), recalling funny remarks made by her children and grandchildren. Some of the things Shirley was not fond of included: bathroom humour, Canadian airlines serving foreign wines, spending money frivolously, doing housework, loud music in restaurants and complainers. Shirley was the loving and supportive mother of John (d.2009) (Rhonda), Jane (David Chan), Crawford (Simone), Tracey and Anne (Gordon Dobson-Mack) and grandmother of Evan, Cameron and Liam Dobson, Joan, Carolyn and Deborah Chan, Chris, Will, Mackenzie, Crawfie, Catie and Blake Dobson, and Crawford and Arran Dobson-Mack. Shirley was the lucky sister of Edith Robins, Ralph Crawford (d. 1998) and Burt Crawford. Our family wishes to thank Dr. Anna Emili and the wonderful staff of Regina Gardens for their kind and professional care of Shirley. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held. If you so wish, a donation can be made to the Alzheimer's society.
"Good night Mom, you're charming and beautiful
and we love you!"
