Kurt Emil MAURER

Kurt Emil MAURER Shiltach, Germany, August 13, 1921 - Vancouver, Canada, September 22, 2013 The oldest of four children born to Emil and Mina (Sola) Maurer, he is survived by Else (Petermann), the love of his life whom he married in 1948; his brother Edgar; and all six children, Lotar (Wendy), Werner (Pam), Rolf, Helga, Horst (Rose), and Ingrid (Jeremy); thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Kurt immigrated to Canada in 1952, settling in Vancouver, and was joined a year later by Else and their young family. He took great pride in being able to provide the family its own home just a year after moving to Canada. In 1956 he joined Hagen's Travel Service, and over the next two decades built it up into one of the premier travel agencies in the country. An avid hiker, skier, and pilot who accumulated 2600 flying hours in his Cessna, he instilled in his children an appreciation for literature and books. Kurt gave generously of himself to the many organizations whose goals he shared, including the Edelweiss Credit Union, the Vancouver Alpen Club, the Rotary Club of East Vancouver, the SKAL Club, the International Association of Travel Agents, the Canadian Institute of Certified Travel Counsellors, the German-Canadian Businessmen's Association, the Arts Club Theatre, the Vancouver Museum Association, among many. Active and independent almost to the end, Kurt was well cared for by the doctors, nurses, and aides of Vancouver General Hospital, where he spent his last days after a fall at home. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, September 26 at First Memorial, 602 Kingsway. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the German-Canadian Benevolent Society of British Columbia would honour his memory.
