NORVILLE, Michael Kent
January 20, 1921- January 26, 2013
After years of declining health, Michael died peacefully at VGH with family at his side. Much beloved husband of Ann for 48 years; loving father of Dominique (Simon Davie); proud grandfather of Isabel; caring senior member of the Descantes extended family. He leaves relatives and close friends in Austria, Germany, the U.S. and Canada. Born in Vienna, Austria, Michael left in 1938 to study in England. After the outbreak of WWII
, he was interned on the Isle of Man, later serving in the British Army until his transfer in 1947 to the Allied Commission of Austria. A gifted linguist, he was a translator at the Nuremberg trials in 1946. Michael immigrated to Edmonton in 1953, moving to Vancouver in 1960, where he joined the offices of Dr. B.W. Hoeter as translator, accountant, and later, notary public. He opened his own notarial practice in 1980. In 1986 he joined the Austrian Consulate in Vancouver as Hon. Vice-Consul and became Hon. Consul in 1997. He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Austrian Order of Merit in 1992. Michael retired in 2002. He was a very intelligent man with many interests, including music, art, architecture, literature and sports. Michael was also known for his encyclopedic knowledge and memory, and his own brand of humour. The memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday February 16, 2013 at St. Mark's Luth. Ev. Church, 1573 E. 18th Ave., Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Health and Home Care Society of BC, 204-3077 Granville St., Van., B.C. V6H 9Z9.
