TYTHERLEIGH, Michael Henry Hornby
March 16, 1926 – February 20, 2013
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael "Mike" on Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at home with his loving partner, Colleen, and his two granddaughters, Jessica and Yanika, by his side.
Michael is survived by his partner of 30 years, Colleen, and her family; his sister, Paula (Paul); his nephews, Benjamin (Danielle) and Nicholas; his ex-wife, Cynthia and their son, Mark; his two granddaughters, Jessica (Kyle) and Yanika (Josh); and his three great grandchildren, Mélodie, Mykah and Autumn.
Michael is predeceased by his first wife, Rosemary, his son, Guy, and his daughter, Dawn.
Michael was born on March 16, 1926 in Divizes, England. He served in the British Navy for three years and worked as a journalist for Fleet Street. Michael emigrated to Sydney, Australia, to Dublin, Ireland and then to Winnipeg, Manitoba. In Winnipeg, Michael was a journalist for the Winnipeg Free Press. Finally, Michael moved to Vancouver, B.C. where he enjoyed his working career as a journalist for the Vancouver Sun and Province newspapers. In Michael's retirement, he spent his final 13 years living near Sechelt, B.C., with his partner, Colleen, where they spent endless days sailing off the Sunshine Coast, through the Gulf Islands, and Michael golfing with friends. Michael's passions were sailing, horseracing, golf and travel.
A special thanks to the Palliative Care Unit, St. Mary's Hospital and staff, Dr. Mundy, Dr. Chow, Dr. Wadge, Dr. Smiljanic and Dr. Werb. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club at 3811 Point Grey Road, on Friday, March 1, Eight Bells Service at 1:30 p.m. Reception following at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
