Alan KRAUS Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from May 22 to May 24, 2015.
KRAUS, Alan David
BA Cornell, MBA Stanford, PhD. Cornell
Professor Emeritus, UBC Finance
June 21, 1939 – May 16, 2015
Alan Kraus' release from the suffering brought on by Lewy Body Disease came peacefully in the presence of family. Alan was predeceased by his parents, Emil and Lucy Kraus, and by his loving first wife, Berit, in 2003. He is survived by his devoted wife, Jean (McLagan) Kraus, two loving children, Anna and Per, and their respective spouses, Sean Irvine and Kate Kraus. He was beloved Morfar to Nathalie and Linnea Irvine, Farfar to Stella Kraus and Grandpa to William and Frederic Chooi. Adored big brother to Barbara Vamossy and Marcia Glynn, and spouses Charles Vamossy and William Glynn. He will be missed by his niece Jennifer, and nephews Brian Glynn, and John and Stephen Vamossy, as well as their families. Much- loved stepfather to Fiona Chooi and husband Kenneth, Emma McLagan and Caitlin McLagan. Born in Schenectady, New York, Alan was an internationally renowned economist. As a theoretician, Alan made major contributions to the field of financial economics for which he received many accolades and awards. Beyond his extensive academic and professional accomplishments, however, he will be remembered by his students, colleagues and friends for his warmth, generosity and his unfailing modesty. He was a great teacher and mentor, always looking for the best in others. His impact on the doctoral program at UBC Finance was perhaps his greatest teaching legacy. Alan was a man of considerable wit and charm, love and compassion with eclectic interests. He was an avid outdoor enthusiast, and enjoyed a variety of pursuits throughout his life including hiking, jogging, rowing and tennis. He was a lover of language, crossword puzzles and poetry. He was as likely to quote Robert Frost as he was to quote Beowulf. He will be dearly missed by family and good friends both here and internationally. We all rejoice in having known Alan whose exuberant spirit enriched and sustained everyone he knew.
"Good-night, sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."
The family thanks the staff and administration of South Granville Park Lodge for the excellent care and compassion given to Alan during the year and a half he was with them. A Celebration of Alan's Life will take place on Saturday, May 30 at 1 p.m. at the University Golf Club (UBC). Online tributes may be left at remembering.ca. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Parkinson Society BC or the Alan Kraus Scholarship at the Sauder School of Business at UBC would be sincerely welcomed.

My deepest condolences to the family, Alan was a great man and I hope he is at peace. I was one of Alan's doctoral students and I was therefore blessed. He was patient and understanding, even when I defied being understandable. I learned a great deal from Alan and I'll remember our conversations to the end of my days.

My wife and I closely worked with Alan's first wife Berit at UBC Press, thus Alan was a familiar figure in our lives for more than a decade. After Berit's death, we only saw Alan a few times, but once we met him with Jean in Stongs grocery store and he introduced her proudly. He was beaming.

During her final illness, Berit confided to us that she was more concerned about Alan's health than her own illness. She worried terribly about what would become him after she was gone. That day I was overwhelmed with the feeling of how content she would have been to see what we saw. I didn't have the opportunity to say that to Alan, but we looked at each other and I was very sure that he knew what I was thinking.

We send our most sincere condolences to Jean, Kajsa, Per and all of Alan's extended family.

My deepest sympathy at the loss of your sweet prince ,I know you were so devoted to each other. I remember the many times seeing you pushing Alan in his chair when you would both go for a walk together.I would honk my car horn ,call out to you both , have a little chat. You both would smile and wave at me,you would lean over and give Alan a kiss on the cheek.A special couple indeed. God Bless .Candice Owen-Jones

I feel so fortunate to have met Alan, both at the delightful wedding, and later when he and Jean visited my home in Victoria. We enjoyed celebrating his birthday dinner together, and Mick and Alan shared stories about PhD studies at Carlton University, NY. It was a joy to see the love that Alan and Jean shared. I am so sorry this devotion couldn't have continued for many years.
