Shui Yim, known to friends as "Yim", passed away at home peacefully on March 16, 2018, surrounded by family and friends. He valiantly lived with prostate cancer for over 14 years. A native of Hong Kong, Yim attended the University of British Columbia and University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland prior to working as a Chinese Librarian at UBC's Asian Library until his retirement in 1999. Yim was a writer, translator, curator and master calligrapher. His published books include Essays from the Hall of Hidden Jade, 80 Years of My Life, and 100 Sayings from the Analects (collaboration). In all, he curated 10 collective and four of his own solo Chinese calligraphy exhibitions in North America and Asia. A beloved member of the community, Yim built cultural bridges throughout his life with translation, essay writing and calligraphy. Many of his works of ink and brush calligraphy were shown in exhibitions and collected by the Canadian Museum of History, UBC, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, International Buddhist Temple in Richmond, BC, and Nankai University located in Tianjin, China. He was a lifelong teacher of calligraphy and mentor, with many of his students spread all over Metro Vancouver and elsewhere. Yim is survived by his loving wife Jenny, daughter Dawn (Jamie) and grandson Maximus. He also leaves behind his sister Shuk Ming Auyang (Ho); and brother Stephen Tse (May) as well as many nieces and nephews. A celebration of his life will be held on March 30, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 3789 Royal Oak Ave, Burnaby. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Yim can be made to the BC Cancer Foundation, in support of Prostate Cancer research for Dr Kim Chi.
