ABERBACH, Alan David March 18, 1932 - August 1, 2010 Alan Aberbach, Director of the SFU Seniors Program, historian, and opera expert, Sunday August 1st at St. Paul's Hospital, Vancouver. Dr. Aberbach was born in Bayonne, New Jersey, son of Aaron and Sydna Dorothy Aberbach. After completing degrees at Rutgers University and the University of Florida, he began his teaching career in the United States at Guilford College and Long Island University. He became a charter faculty member of the SFU History Department in 1964. Beyond his work as a historian and teacher, he was devoted to opera. He published several books on Richard Wagner and broadcast extensively for the CBC; he founded both the Vancouver Opera Club and the SFU Opera Studies Program, and served as a board member of Vancouver Opera. When he reached retirement age he began a new career as Director of the SFU Seniors Program. He is survived by his brother Joel, sister-in-law Beverly, nieces Cindy and Arlene and nephew Craig. He will be fondly missed by his friends and colleages and remembered by his students and by the legions of music enthusiasts whose lives were enriched by his passion for opera. At his request, there will be no service. Donations in his memory will be welcomed by the SFU Seniors Program Endowment Fund.
