COURT, Alice Lorraine (nee Mehr)
Alice Lorraine (Mehr) Court, born December 1, 1929, passed away peacefully at Burnaby Hospital on Sunday, November 4, 2012. Alice is survived by Fred, her loving husband of 66 years, daughters Valerie and Colleen, son-in-law Glen MacGregor, grandchildren Erin and Gavin MacGregor, sister Ella Scott and many nieces and nephews. The youngest of ten children, Alice grew up in a rural farming community near Humbolt Saskatchewan, surrounded by her older siblings and their families. In the winter of 1945, she bought a train ticket to Vancouver, and once she set eyes upon our beautiful city, it became her home. In 1946, she met Fred, the love of her life. They married in July, and lived in various locations in Vancouver. In 1952, they moved to Burnaby and settled in to raise their family. Alice was a community activist, and an advocate for the rights and freedoms of those less fortunate. A life-long member of the CCF/NDP, she always stood strong on issues she believed in. An outspoken advocate for women's rights, fairness and equality in the workplace, and an environmental advocate, Alice raised her girls to be strong women. Although primarily a homemaker, in the 1960s Alice worked for the Canadian Labour Congress. She met many wonderful people during that period, and most became her lifelong friends. Alice enjoyed life. Gardening, country music, the outdoors, and travelling were all priorities, but nothing made her happier than having her family near her. She was Fred's "Prairie Flower" and will be dearly missed by all those who loved her. The family extends their sincere gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Rosa Bitonti, and the Doctors and Nursing Staff at Burnaby Hospital, for the wonderful compassionate care Alice received during the last two months of her life. A "Celebration of Life" will be held at Boal Memorial Chapel in North Vancouver on Monday, November 19, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Burnaby Hospital Foundation or charity of your choice.
