OLIVER, Carol Joanne
July 9, 1955 - November 14, 2012
Carol, a loving friend, wife and mother, passed away on November 14, 2012 at the young age of 57 years. Carol is survived by her husband Kenneth Chiang, her children Nathaniel and Isobel, her father George, brothers Kenneth and Gordon and her sisters Marilyn and Barbara. Carol graduated from Simon Fraser University, Women's Studies in 1980 and received her Masters of Communications from the University of Calgary in 1993, all while raising her two children with her partner Ken. Carol was that rare person with an innate and genuine passion for championing the needs of underprivileged women and children. This is especially exemplified in her work as Executive Director of the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter, Calgary United Way, Canadian Women's Foundation and as Executive Director of Distress Calgary. Carol has spent her life leading with her heart and moral compass. Her desire to give without expectations has earned her a University of Calgary WRC Distinguished Alumni Award and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for her extraordinary service to the community. Her greatest joy was her children. We will miss her courage, her truth and her contagious joy and celebration of others. A private service will be held for immediate family. A "Celebration of Life" will be held December 10, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the Hillhurst United Church Calgary for all friends and colleagues whom she has touched throughout her life. In lieu of flowers, and in keeping with Carol's wishes, the Carol Oliver Memorial Bursary has been established at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Women's Studies to be awarded annually to young aspiring women. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made by phone (403-220-5854) or by cheque to: University of Calgary (Carol Oliver Memorial Bursary) c/o U of C Development Office, 2500 University Dr. NW, Calgary AB T2N 1N4.
