Elizabeth Catherine Johnston 1923 - 2013 Born in Nelson, B.C. her early years were filled with events, coming and goings, friends and wonders as the family owned and operated the Hume Hotel and lived in an upstairs suite, during the boom years of the Kootenays. She was a good student and a top athlete, and enjoyed summers on Kootenay Lake with adventures and mischief. During World War II she went to Vancouver and graduated as a Registered Nurse at St. Paul's Hospital in 1944. Following the war she married John Johnston and bore four sons. She worked as a nurse often during her life, at Burnaby General and later in the Emergency at VGH. In later years she was a realtor on Vancouver Island and in Winnipeg, then settled into retirement years, content to paint with oils and complete any crossword puzzle that came her way. Following a stroke she spent the last few years of her life at Evergreen, part of Lions Gate Hospital, and, ever the nurse, was sharp and clear-minded to the end. The family wishes to thank the staff and caregivers who treated her so well during those years.
