Ernest passed peacefully at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital a few months short of his 90th birthday. He passed with courage, acceptance, and no regrets. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Marion. Ernest served in the navy during the Second World War and was stationed on the west coast. After the war, he and Marion settled in Vancouver where they raised their three children: son, Larry (Sue); daughters, Colleen (Roger), and Cheryl (Eric). Ernest was "grandpa" to six grandchildren and had numerous great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. After his retirement from Crown Zellerbach as their head machinist, Ernest and Marion relocated to Qualicum Beach where they happily resided for the last 20 years. He especially enjoyed golfing with his Eaglecrest buddies and the half-mast flag in his honour was very much appreciated - thank you all! "You weren't forgotten, Dad." Ernest will always be remembered for his positive attitude and quick offers to help others. He was "Mr Fix It" and kept his family amused with favourite expressions of "don't rush me, I'll get to it" and "I'm not fussy!" (contrary to his personality).
We will miss you deeply, Dad.
Our special thanks to Judy and Jim Slater for always being there, Dr El Karsh, the VIHA team for their kind and supportive care, his wonderful neighbours and friends, community volunteers, and all those involved with his care while in NRGH - your skill and compassion were greatly appreciated. There will be no service at his request. Those who would care to honour Ernest's memory may do so by making a donation to the BC Lung Association, 2340 Oak Street, Vancouver, BC V6H 2K2 in his name.
