Gordon Pirie Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Dec. 9 to Dec. 10, 2016.
Gordon passed away peacefully on December 1, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jean (née Nesbitt); sons Andrew (Colleen) and Jonathan (Nicole); sister Patricia; brothers Glen and Jack; and his many nieces and nephews. His grandchildren Michael, Katie, Matthew, Norah and Hazel will dearly miss their Grand-dad/Papa.

Gordon left his hometown of Senlac, Saskatchewan to study medicine at McGill. He met Jean while both were visiting London, England and they married in 1960 after moving to Vancouver. There he worked as a paediatric respirologist and a neonatology intensivist at the Health Centre for Children at VGH. He later spearheaded the building of the Intensive Care Unit at the newly constructed BC Children's Hospital in 1982 where he was the director until his retirement in 1993.

Having been born during the depression, Gordon insisted on building and fixing everything he could get his hands on, much to the chagrin of those family members forced to assist him. He will also be remembered for his passion of music and song, delighting the family gatherings with his skills at the piano. He will be mostly remembered for his keen but eccentric intellect which was so central to his character. His many inventive gadgets and lists were the hallmark of his lively and restless mind.

Thanks must go to the staff of the Sunrise, South Granville Park Lodge, and Arbutus care facilities for their compassion, kindness and hard work.

As per his wishes, there will be no formal memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the BC Children's Hospital.

So sorry to see Dr Gordon has passed away. I remember you Jeanie as we were friends with Elsie with M.O.A's at the UBC's women's club. I worked at VGH CARDIOLOGY. Marilynne Boulton

My husband and I are snowbirds. Recently while shopping at Costco in Palm Desert, another retired Children's Hospital employee stopped to say hello. It is from her that I learned the sad news that Gordon had died recently. Memories came flooding back.

In 1969, when our youngest started school, I was in search of a volunteer opportunity. A friend, also an R.N., mentioned that the C.F. Clinic was looking for someone to do the weekly Pulmonary Function tests on their outpatients. She gave me the number and told me call. That is how Dr. Pirie's and my paths crossed.

Over the next 23 years, first at V.G.H. and then at C.H. where I got a " real" part time job, I came to consider him a valued workplace friend with whom I had many interesting conversations on a wide variety of topics. However, the one constant was - they always culminated with the "doings" of our respective children. We discussed and compared notes, bragged occasionally, questioned their behavior or decisions at times, reassured each other, and rejoyced in their accomplishments as they emerged into responsible young adults. What always came across was how proud Gordon was of both his sons. Andrew and Jonathan - whether or not you were aware of it - you need to know that.

Gordon will be remembered as being a fine man - he had integrity, a wonderful way with kids, a great if quirky sense of humor, and he listened!!!

Please accept my heartfelt condolences .
With warm regards,
