Joanne Earlene Barker (nee Finning) slipped away peacefully at her home in the early hours of Dec. 28th, 2012. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Bill in 2009, her parents Earl and May Finning, and her sister, Mary Margaret Young. She is survived by her sons Geoff (Beth), Bart (Laureen), Frank (Julie), and Stephen (Erin) as well as her daughter Karen Bruk (Steven), 17 grand children and many nieces and nephews.
She was born in Salinas, California in 1926 and moved with her family to Vancouver at the age of two. Joanne attended grade school and high school at York House and graduated from UBC with a BA in Social Work. She married Bill in 1952 and moved to West Vancouver to raise her family. Se was a keen volunteer giving generously of her time to the YWCA, the Vancouver Aquarium and the Girl Scouts of Canada. Joanne was an avid skier and enjoyed many weekends skiing with friends and family at Whistler. She also enjoyed her many summers at Crescent Beach where she spent most of her time in her later years.
She was a kind, gentle and loving soul with a love for life, a generous heart and terrific sense of humour. She will be dearly missed by her family and all that knew her.
A celebration of Joanne's life will be held on Jan. 17th, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Hycroft Manor. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada www.alzheimer.ca/en or to the charity of your choice.
