• "Your light will shine brightly in our hearts always dear..."
    - Tricia Cochran

December 26, 1929 – July 4, 2018
It is with deep sadness we share the news of John's passing at the age of 88 after losing his valiant battle with congestive heart failure. Survived by his loving wife, Helma Sereda; daughters, Gabriela Berlinghof (Russell Tyson) and Patricia Cochran (Bradley Turner); grandchildren Alicia Dien, Alexandra Dien, Jordan Turner and Corbin Turner; brothers Walter and Franz; sisters, Rosie, Poldie, Mitzi, and Fini, all of Austria, and Anna of Toronto. Predeceased by his parents Leopoldi Gassner and Johann Sereda. John grew up in Austria where he did an apprenticeship as a shoe maker. He went on to work in mines in Australia and eventually settled in BC with his beloved wife and family while working in the sawmill industry until his retirement. John's passions were family, gardening, classical music, soccer and hockey. John lived his life, as described by those that knew him, as always happy, caring, a bright light, a role model, and an amazingly hard worker. He always had time to help anyone who needed assistance. He was truly loved by so many and will be deeply missed by all those whose lives he touched. A special note of thanks goes to the amazing care by the staff of the Surrey Memorial Hospital during John's final hours. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, July 19 at the small chapel at Valley View Funeral Home and Cemetery at 14660 – 72nd Avenue, Surrey, BC. A Celebration of Life will be held immediately following the service at the Cochran/Turner residence.
