Maria Anna Furstenwald

Maria Anna Furstenwald January 8, 1925 - January 14, 2016 Born in Wloclawek, Poland, Maria was predeceased by her brothers Stefan of Frankfurt and George of Vancouver, and by her long time friend and companion, Margaret Prang. After World War II Maria fled from Poland to the British occupied zone of Germany where she became a teacher. In 1953 she immigrated to Canada, where she earned a doctorate from McGill University and taught Germanic Studies at the University of British Columbia. In retirement, Maria continued to live a life filled with extended family and friends in Canada, Germany and Poland. Special thanks to the staff of the German Canadian Care Home for their loving attention to Maria during her last few years. A private interment of ashes in the Memorial Garden of Ryerson United Church is planned.
