Our beloved Mary, a lifelong advocate for women and for improving women's lives in the developing world, died from cancer on August 5, 2013 at the age of 59. She grew up in North Vancouver and throughout her life was drawn to the mountains, the forests and the ocean. Mary focused on women and development issues in countries as far-ranging as India, Somalia, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and most notably Indonesia, promoting better health care and family planning for women; safe drinking water and sanitation; co-op agricultural development; social forestry; and adult literacy. She spoke Bahasa Indonesia and several other languages fluently. Mary returned to Canada in the early 1990s and continued as a women and development advisor to projects around the globe. In her last years, her deeply-felt love of nature led to work with a B.C. environmental group dedicated to protecting the ocean and coastal communities. Mary loved tennis and supported soccer and field hockey programs for North Shore girls. She loved hiking, camping and exploring the B.C. coast. We will all remember her tenacity, her strength of spirit, her determination, her compassion and caring, and her unending love for family and friends. Mary is deeply mourned by her husband, David Lane; daughter, Morgen Lane Lindsay; mother, Thelma Lindsay, sister, Grace Lindsay (Bruce Lounds); brothers, Fred Lindsay (Rosemary) and John Lindsay (Kathy), father-in-law, Robert Lane; brother-in-law, Bruce Lane (Kathleen McKay); nieces and nephews as well as countless friends and colleagues around the world. She was predeceased by her father James Lindsay and her mother-in-law Helen Lane. Mary and her wonderful life will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. August 21, 2013 at First Memorial (Boal Chapel): 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Canadian Women's Foundation, Suite 504 - 133 Richmond Street West, Toronto, Ontario, M5H 2L3.
