ROBINSON, Mary Josephine (nee Rowan)
December 25, 1917 - January 24, 2013
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mary Josephine Robinson. Jo passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by family one month after her 95th birthday. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, J. Lewis Robinson in 2008. She is survived by three generations of Robinsons: by her son David and his wife, Zonda Nellis and their daughter Alexandra, and her husband, Madhavan Sridhar; and by her great-granddaughter, named after her, Maya Josephine Madhavan; by her daughter Jo- Anne and her partner, Sue Bailey; and her daughter Patricia and her husband, David St. Laurent, and their children, Michael and Joanna. She is also survived by her brother Maurice Rowan of Annapolis Royal. Predeceased by her sister Isabelle McCormick of Calgary and Leo Rowan of Fredericton. Born in Fredericton, New Brunswick in 1917, Jo graduated from Normal School and taught in rural New Brunswick before studying History and Political Science at The University of New Brunswick (B.A.) and International Relations at Clark University (M.A.). During the war she was a private secretary to Mackenzie King in Ottawa. In 1946 she came to Vancouver with her husband who started the Geography Dept. at U.B.C. Jo was active in the University Faculty Women's Club and loved to cook and entertain. She was actively involved in deaf education and served as President of the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Jo co-authored several books and articles with her husband as well as writing her own cookbook: Vancouver Entertains. She opened her home to family, relatives, friends, faculty and students alike. She was known for her hospitality; her recipes travelled far. Mother, you taught us true understanding - limitless kindness, never- ending patience, unconditional love. We will carry your memory everywhere; we are all your replacements on earth. May we have another tender helping of eternity; perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in the heavens where your love shines through... Thank you to the staff and superior care at Sunrise of Vancouver. A funeral mass will be held at St. Mark's Parish, U.B.C. Campus, 5935 Iona Drive, Vancouver, B.C. on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at 10 a.m. Reception following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the J. Lewis Robinson Memorial Scholarship, c/o U.B.C. Development Office.
